There are a plethora of different manufacturers supporting the e-Bike brands. Bosch and Bafang are two companies that provide top-of-the-line motors for e-Bikes. Bike brands may produce their own motor and still each bike has the same result of a bike with either a mid-drive or a hub-drive motor. 

As a hunter on the prowl looking to join the ranks of other hunters using electric bikes, you need to understand the primary components that make a bike the best for hunting. The motor and the battery make up the two most important and costly components of an electric bike. Knowing each will help you understand what capabilities each bike being offered has, and why one bike may be priced differently than another. 

The battery is the main component within an e-Bike as it provides the amp hours (time the bike will assist - also known as the range) it also provides the volts which is the power through electricity leaving the battery pushing the motor and rider forward. 

While the battery provides you assistance and ultimately the more volts allow you to traverse the hills and mountains, the motor ultimately drives the assistance through watts and assists with the max torque for pulling trailers or traversing the hills and mountains.

As a backcountry hunter or angler, you need the best bike that will hold up to the hard terrain for your adventures, and the motor component of the bike is important to know and understand. But don't forget the battery. As explained in our blog "Hunters and Anglers Guide to Understanding e-Bike Batteries" you want to have a 48V battery with a minimum of 17 amp hours of run time for optimal performance and range. 

There are two types of e-Bike motors. The mid-drive and the hub drive. Knowing each type and how they influence your ride, you will know why a mid-drive motor may be a better choice for offroad FAT Tire travel, while e-bikes with hub drive motors have lower price points. 

Let's get into the weeds and get clarity on the two types of bike motors and which one might be best for your circumstances. 

What Size Motor is Best for My Hunting E-Bike?

That question depends on the rider, location, weight, and gear being hauled. The motor size provides the power assist for the bike. The watt is the rated power and the torque produced is the ability to rotate the rear wheel.

What you need to know when looking at bikes is how many watts the motor can produce. The best offroad bikes will have a higher 750-1500 max power output.

To understand how many watts your bike's motor can produce you need to also understand what battery you have on your bike. The max watts for an e-bike is based on this calculation:

Volts x Amps = Watts

As an example, the Bafang M620 motor has a maximum torque of 160Nm (Nm is Newton meters of power). It is rated as a 1000-watt motor and is sold as an eCargo and eFat motor for the heaviest loads. This motor allows the rider to dial down the overall watt output to 750w to be in compliance with Class 1 e-Bike regulations or dial it up to 1000 watts to get the most power and speed out of the bike.

When selecting a hunting bike consider all the different choices and bike amenities. You cannot just look at the style, you need to look at the brand, component brands, and the reviews. 

The best hunting bikes on the market today have a minimum of 750-watt motor. You can get a 750w motor in both the hub-drive and mid-drive motors. An optimal motor is one that has the ability to be changed based on where the bike is being ridden. With the regulations of bike Classes, the rider must know what is allowed in where they are riding. 

As we explain the differences between mid-drive and hub-drive motors you will learn that the best option for FAT Tire Hunting e-Bikes is the mid-drive. The mid-drive motors provide power directly at the crankset in the middle of the frame.  Therefore, you get more torque and power immediately to the bike.

Okay, the first thing to know about the mid-drive motor is its location. This motor is located between the pedals and this is why the bike produces more power than that of the hub-drive motor. Hub drive motors can come in two types. A single hub motor or a dual hub motor. No matter which style you purchase the hub drive motor is located in the center of the wheel. 

A rider will get a very different feeling when operating a hub-drive bike. If the motor is in the front wheel you may feel a pull sensation or if the motor is in the rear you may feel like the bike is being pushed. 

The experience is different depending on the motor location but it doesn't actually mean a front motor is better than a rear motor or vice versa.

The two-motor location is also known as an all-wheel-drive option. The AWD gives the bike more control in fair conditions and propels the bike using both the front and rear motors. The dual motors will likely have two different wattages and you would combine the two to get the bike's overall watt. For example, the Eunora Defender-S, shown above, has two 750-watt motors giving it a combined watt of 1500. 

But what about the regulations and restrictions of power for my e-bike according to the Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 regulations? The controls on the bike allow you to dial down the max watt and put you into the Class 1 or up to the Class 3 pedal assist bike.

The components within the motor will make for the best quality overall motor. Having all metal gearing will keep the motor from wearing out the teeth and other components inside. 

A mid-drive motor having load control and sensor design gives the rider control and better response. Having a powerful motor with up to 160Nm of max assistance will allow a rider to go anywhere.  

How to Understand the Power Output for a Hunting e-Bike Motor

The power output refers to the Volts a battery can produce. Depending on the terrain a 36V volt motor may be efficient to get you around town. 

For a hunter looking to climb hills and travel backcountry, your minimum volts should be 48. This will get you the torque to climb hills with no problem. 

How Important Is Battery Capacity for Motor Output and Power

Choosing a battery that has 48V and 17Ah of the range will typically be enough for the average hunter who can recharge the battery back at camp or home. 

The battery capacity or range is indicated by the Ah or "amp-hour". This is a manufactures max for the battery. If a battery says 17Ah then the indication is the battery can last for 17 hours of range or sometimes it will be recorded in the distance of 30-50 miles.

The range of a battery will be influenced by several factors. These factors include the overall weight on the bike, the terrain and amount of pedal assist, and the terrain you are traveling. 

Since batteries are tested in controlled environments, I suggest you take your bike on a few rides to gauge the actual battery life before you head out and get caught in the backcountry without a charged battery.

Charging your battery requires a 2A or 3A charger that is provided by the manufacturer specifically for the battery you have on your bike. Okay outdoorsmen and women it's time to make a decision.

Which motor will you choose a Mid-Drive or Hub-Drive?

Guy's when you choose a bike or brand that bike has a motor installed and you don't get to choose which motor types you want. 

You need to decide on the motor and battery that is best for your application and work back from those components to the best bike. for your price range. Or You choose your price range and work around that and analyze the components, battery, and motor options.

What you learned today is there are two types of e-bike motors. The hub-drive motor can come as one hub motor or two and the mid-drive motor gives you more torque and power. You learned that the mid-drive motor is newer technology and is most popular because you can get more torque and power out of the bike.

You also learned that a mid-drive motor is easily removed and repaired or replaced while the hub-drive motor has more working parts and ultimately can impact the repairs and cost to repair the motor. 

The best choice for backcountry hunters and anglers is a mid-drive motor and battery combination of 48v and 17Ah minimum. But if the price is too much look for hub-drive options with dual hubs having, at minimum 750w.

The bike battery is the powerhouse that enables you to effortlessly traverse rugged terrains, conquer steep slopes, and extend your range into areas no others have traveled. 

In this blog, I will explain and educate you, my fellow hunter and fisherman, on the types of electric bike batteries in the market and what combination of volts and amp hours are best suited for hunters and anglers. By shedding light on their features, benefits, and specs you will be able to choose the right combination of power and range for your e-bike.

Two Main Types of Batteries for Electric Bikes

Right off the bat, I learned that although there are four different types of batteries that have been used for e-bikes, there are only two main types of batteries being incorporated into off-road hunting e-Bike manufacturers at this time.  

Knowing the differences and what else is out there for electric bikes is a must. The different types of batteries will influence the weight, distance, and charging capabilities. Here is a quick overview of all battery options for e-bikes on the market along with their characteristics and performance. The most common types of electric bike batteries are:

1. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Batteries: Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular and widely used type of battery for electric bikes. They offer a good balance between energy density, weight, and lifespan. Li-ion batteries come in different chemistries, such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), and lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4). Li-ion batteries provide high energy storage capacity, are relatively lightweight, and can offer a long cycle life.
2. Lithium Polymer (LiPo) Batteries: Lithium polymer batteries are another type of lithium-based battery commonly used in electric bikes. They are similar to Li-ion batteries but use a different electrolyte and packaging. LiPo batteries are known for their high energy density, which means they can store a lot of energy in a compact size. They are lightweight and can be molded into various shapes, making them suitable for electric bikes with unconventional designs.
3. Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries: While not as common as lithium-based batteries, NiMH batteries were once widely used in electric bikes. They have a decent energy density and can provide a reasonable cycle life. However, compared to lithium-based batteries, NiMH batteries are heavier, have a lower energy-to-weight ratio, and are less environmentally friendly due to the presence of toxic materials like nickel and cadmium.
4. Lead-Acid Batteries: Lead-acid batteries are the oldest and least advanced type of electric bike battery. They are heavy, bulky, and have a relatively low energy density compared to lithium-based batteries. Lead-acid batteries are often found in cheaper or older electric bikes. They are being phased out in favor of more advanced battery technologies due to their disadvantages.

It's worth noting that within each battery type, there can be variations in quality, capacity, voltage, and other specifications. We will discuss the volts and amp hours further in this blog. 

Okay, now that you know the different types, you should know I found that the most popular hunting e-bikes have either a Lithium-Ion or Lithium Polymer battery. The Lithium-Ion battery can hold a charge the longest and these batteries are typically lighter than their counterparts. 

How to Decipher Amp Hours for Electric Bikes

Ready to buy, but what is this "Ah" and how do I interpret what it means?

When you are looking at bikes and they state the battery is a 15Ah, 17Ah, 24Ah, or some other number they are providing you the "amp hours" for the battery. Ideally, this means how many miles you can get or hours of riding time you should get based on some specific criteria.

Another way Energy is measured is by Wh or Watt Hour. A Bafang BT F38.960.0, which is a popular battery combination with Bafang motors in Fat Tire Hunting e-Bikes has an Amp Hour of 20 and a Wh of 960. This battery will have a good range depending on conditions. 

What they are trying to let you know is in testing conditions the battery should last 20 hours on a full charge and provide 960 watts of power. 

What you need to know as a consumer is the lower the amp hours the less time you have on the trail or road. While battery manufacturers will give you their max charge and range, these figures are variable and will depend on several additional factors to give you actual range. 

5 Factors Influencing The E-Bike Battery Run Time or Amp Hour

1. Load on the Bike - how much gear you are carrying. 
2. Your Personal Weight - many Fat Tire hunting bikes max out at 300 lbs - if you max the bike you will be maxing the battery and run time.
3. Charge - did you get a full charge? You need to monitor the battery charge levels. 
4. Terrain - the manufactures suggested run time is 17 hours, for example, but it most likely doesn't consider the terrain. If you are running up and down hills or mountains your battery will drain quicker.
5. Weather - battery output can be influenced by the weather. 

In our research and discussions with other knowledgeable e-Bike sales and manufacturers, the best Amp Hour for a standard hunting electric bike is 17Ah or higher and some bike sellers offer upgrades or optional batteries with higher 21-24 Ah options.

** Special note: when you get higher voltage and amp hour batteries consider the additional weight to the bike. Bike batteries are not light, you will find that a 48V 21Ah battery may weigh 8lb or more. 

How Long Will It Take to Recharge My E-Bike Battery?

The charge time to get a full battery recharge will vary. Each manufacturer will give you a different time based on a 2A or 3A service. The "A" is the amp and indicates the max current a charger can supply.

The Bafang BT F38.960.0 model has an 8-hour charge time using a 3 amp charger and DC2.1 charge port. 

Wrap-Up Ah "Amp Hours" for Hunting E-Bike Batteries

To wrap up this part on the battery and how long you can ride before you run out of time we have this to offer. Use the manufactures noted run time allotment of 17 hours, 22 hours, or whatever they mention in their owner's manual, and know your overall run time will be something less based on your load and terrain. While there is no specific number for how much less, you will need to track your time and distance and get familiar with your battery's true usage specs. 

If you plan to run the bike along forest service roads or more flat terrain you will get a similar ultimate run time to that of the manufacturer's specs. But if you are running a heavy load, keep track of your location and distance back to your charging location so you are not left with zero battery assistance.  

My suggestion is you should do your own testing and research of the bike you purchase before you head out on a multi-day backcountry hunt with your e-bike. Before you go, test around your home on trails or hills and see how the battery drains. Test changing the conditions including adding weight, subtracting weight, and doing your own analysis pinpointing your sweet spot for your battery's life. 

The bad thing is when the bike's battery is dead you are riding a heavy mountain bike. Make sure you know your limitations and what you can handle in this situation. Bike smarter, not harder! 

Battery Volts and Torque: How and Why They are Important for Hunting Bikes

Now we are talking...

All the men out there want to know about horsepower under the hood of each other's trucks and for e-bikes here it is. The volts a battery has will define the power or torque output on your hunting bike.

If you purchase a hunting bike with 36v and 70-80N.m (max) and you are not happy with the bike because it appears to have no guts, well you bought the wrong battery or bike!

Here is what you need to know about Volts and Torque

1. The "V" stands for Voltage Scope - that means how much electricity is leaving the battery to push the motor and propel you forward. The power the battery provides influences how much N.m is able to be put out. 
2. N.m stands for Newton meters and is the rotational power of the motor that is used to assist the rider while pedaling. The higher the torque (N.m number), the stronger the support from the motor and battery and the less effort you as the rider need to provide for that uneven terrain.

Therefore, when you have a battery with 36v  you will get less torque and power, and this bike battery would be best to use on flat ground.

But for us using the e-bike as a tool for hunting and fishing we want to use a battery with more Volts and N.m like a 48v battery providing 160N.m maximum.

Many Fat Tire and Off-Road Electric bikes will come standard with a 48V battery and you may even see them as high as 52 or more. Start with a 48V battery as this will provide the correct amount of power for traveling up and down mountains and terrain, while also providing enough energy to propel the bike faster. Remember the weight of the battery will increase with the more volt and Ah the battery carries and bikes may be limited to the size of the overall battery because of the limitation of the designs and space on the bike. 

How to Charge a Hunting e-Bike Properly

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your electric bike battery, it's important to follow the proper charging method recommended by the battery and bike manufacturer. While there may be a variety of options here, this is a general step-by-step guide to charging an electric bike battery:

1. Read the Manual: Start by familiarizing yourself with the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations specific to your electric bike battery. Different models and brands may have slight variations in charging procedures.
2. Use the Correct Charger: Always use the charger provided by the manufacturer or a compatible charger recommended for your electric bike battery. Using an incorrect charger can damage the battery or compromise its performance.
3. Connect the Charger: Locate the charging port on your electric bike and plug in the charger securely. Ensure that the connection is tight to prevent any interruptions during the charging process.
4. Power Source: Plug the charger into a standard electrical outlet or an appropriate power source. Ensure the outlet is compatible with the charger's voltage and amperage requirements.
5. Charging Indicator: Most electric bike chargers have LED indicators that display the charging status. It could be a simple light that turns on when charging or a more detailed indicator that shows different stages of the charging process.
6. Charging Time: Allow the battery to charge fully according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Charging times may vary depending on the battery's capacity and the charger's specifications. Avoid interrupting the charging process prematurely, as it can affect the battery's performance.
7. Safety Precautions: While charging, keep the battery and charger away from flammable materials, heat sources, or water. Follow any safety instructions provided by the manufacturer to prevent accidents or damage.
8. Unplug and Store: Once the battery is fully charged, unplug the charger from the power source and disconnect it from the electric bike. Store the charger in a safe and dry place until the next charging cycle.

It's essential to note that lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries, commonly used in electric bikes, do not require full discharge before recharging. In fact, frequent shallow charging cycles (topping up the battery) are often recommended over complete discharge. This practice helps maintain battery health and extends its lifespan.

By adhering to these guidelines and the manufacturer's instructions, you can ensure efficient and safe charging for your electric bike battery, allowing you to enjoy reliable power during your off-road adventures.

The question remains, can I charge my e-bike while camping and hunting? And the answer is yes, but be cautious. Here are a few things to consider. 

1. Using a Generator - make sure you are getting the right power output. The generator is great but the flow of power output can be variable. 
2. Use Safety - the use of charging from variable sources could impact the battery and cause unsafe conditions. 
3. Plug directly into the generator - using extension cords can inhibit and cause damage to the bike's battery. 
4. Charging Time Could be Impacted - on a normal 8-hour full charge window it may take longer to charge when using a generator. 
5. Fuel and Noise - charging while on a camping trip will cause you to run a generator for a long period of time. Make sure you have the window of time available for a complete charge and that you have enough fuel to run the generator.
6. Room Temperature for Storage and Charging - do not charge the battery in cold conditions. Lithium Ion Batteries need to be at room temperature for optimal performance and charging. If you are camping or hunting in cold conditions try to warm the battery itself prior to plugging in and charging. 

Best Practices for When to Charge an E-Bike Battery

Lithium Ion batteries are built to function best between 65 degrees and 95 degrees. Cooler temperatures and hotter temperatures are generally not good for the battery life.

When charging a battery make sure the battery is at room temperature before charging. Do not try and charge the battery when the temperatures are near freezing or below as you could damage the battery. 

As a rule of thumb don't let the battery get below 10% charge and do not keep the battery at full 100% charge for long periods of time. The best charge for storing a battery is between 40-60 percent of capacity.

When charging your e-bike battery make sure you are charging directly into a wall outlet for your battery charger. The best charging conditions are ones that are stable and using an extension cord could prohibit the proper charging and could cause additional damage. Manufacturers will not warranty a battery if they are not being charged according to their manufactured regulations. 

The battery doesn't need to be completely drained before charging. Periodic charges when the battery is between 50-90 percent are good for the battery.

If you plan on storing your bike for extended periods (1 month or longer). Make sure you follow these suggestions:

1. Remove the battery and store it in a safe location at room temperature. Do not store the battery in a heated location that can get up over 90 degrees continuously and do not store where the battery will be cold for long periods of time.
2. Drain your battery to 40 percent before storage. Never store a fully charged battery as you will damage the cells. 

Safety is Concern #1 with hunting e-bike batteries and charging. Make sure you are charging your battery in a safe location and be prepared for the worse. Batteries to catch on fire. Having the proper safety procedures ready is best. Having a proper fire extinguisher on hand for worse-case scenarios and knowing what NOT to do is very important. 

Never overcharge the e-bike battery. Charge to full and then remove the battery from the charging cord and wall outlet. Don't leave the battery plugged in unattended and don't overcharge the battery. Store the battery in a safe location until your next trip. Remember it is not good for the battery to be fully charged while being stored. 

What is the Life Expectancy of a Hunting E-Bike Battery

Different battery manufacturers will give different expected life predictions for their individual batteries. While a good rule of thumb is a battery should last you 5-8 years, that bold statement can be influenced by several factors.

In perfect charging and storage conditions with standard or typical wear, tear, and usage, you should expect a good life expectancy of between 3-6 years. Batteries are not cheap, a quality 48V 21Ah battery for your hunting bike could cost $700-$1200 depending on the manufacturer.

Lithium Ion batteries decline in capacity over time. So while you are charging consistently the battery itself will hold less of a charge and deplete quicker over time. 

Higher temperature conditions can influence the battery's overall life. Use and storage in hotter climates have proven to reduce battery life. On Blixbike.com website they discuss their Blix Batteries and note "The battery's capacity in cold weather may be temporarily reduced, but its lifetime is diminished at higher temperatures."

Here are 5 Tips To Save Your Battery and Prolong its Life:

1. Use the Manufacturer's Charger - do not buy a cheap imitation. If you spent a lot of money on your hunting e-bike then don't skimp on the charger.
2. Maintain a 20-80 percent charge at all times - that includes storage and transport. Don't fully charge the battery before you take off on a long drive to your hunting location.
3. Charge during best conditions - don't charge the battery in cold weather 
4. Keep the Battery dry and clean - don't get the battery submerged in water. A little rain is okay, but sitting outside in the rain is not good for the battery.
5. Store your battery in room temperature conditions - if you know you will be off the bike for several weeks or months, then store the battery in a room temperature location. Don't store in the garage in extreme heat and cold and don't store the battery with a full charge. Check on the battery while in storage. If it is hot or you see the battery has gone below 30% charge then charge the battery back to 40-50% for continued storage. Don't allow the battery to drain completely.

How to Replace My Hunting E-Bike Battery

Each bike manufacturer has a suggested battery for their bike. They could have two or more options for which battery to choose when purchasing. But, each bike is only equipped, by the manufacturer, for one or two options. 

The newer aerodynamic bikes with better weight distribution and battery security have a custom frame construction with the battery enclosed in the tubing and locked into place. These self-enclosed battery sleeves on a bike will typically only have one manufacturer's battery capable of fitting into the space correctly. These batteries are designed to fit the space designed for the battery. The manufacturer designs the bike with a secured location, but this also limits your ability to change battery styles or types. 

Eunorau, Rambo, QuietKat, and Bakcou all offer replacement batteries for their bikes. It is my recommendation and that of the bike manufacturers that you replace the battery with a like kind from the bike manufacturer. 

Battery prices will generally be between $700 and $1200 for a 48v 17Ah battery. Battery prices will vary based on the manufacturer and specs. 

When you purchase your bike, the battery is generally one of the largest cost. Consider the replacement cost when making your final decisions regarding which bike to buy. If you know the battery will go bad in the next 3 to 5 years consider that added cost of hundreds or thousands of dollars. Just like your cell phone, nothing lasts forever.

What is the Best e-Bike Battery For Hunters and Backcountry Anglers?

When heading into the backcountry to catch some mountain lake trout or hunting you want a battery that has the best chance for success and one that will give you the best relief from carrying gear and walking miles. 

Choose a battery that has 48 Volts to give you the torque necessary to climb hills and grab a battery that can get you in and out without being recharged. The batter should be, at minimum, a 17 Ah battery. 

If your bike manufacturer offers a battery that is 52 volts and 22 Ah - pick that choice. But, ultimately the decision as to which battery is right for you need three considerations. 

1. Can you handle the additional weight - a larger battery, if available, will weigh more and if you run out of charge you will be pedaling a mountain bike that could weigh 75 lbs or more on its own. 
2. How far off-grid do you plan on going - if your hunting terrain is rugged and you plan on traveling several miles into the backcountry, then a 48v 21Ah would be a great choice. If you are running around the flats of Unit 4B in Arizona and you heading back to town every night, then you could get a 48v with 17Ah and that would suffice. Don't get a 36v battery if you are doing any heavy terrain. 
3. The cost will be more - yep the better the battery the higher the cost. It may cost you $100 or $500 more for an upgraded battery. Know your expected riding area and you can choose which size battery is right for you.

As an avid hunter, I know that getting to my hunting spot quickly and quietly can be a challenge.  If you follow Shaggy Outdoors you know that we typically hunt in the Midwest (Wisconsin and Michigan) and Southwest (Arizona).

Having the right mode of transportation has always been a conversation over a few beers and campfires. We found early on that having a side-by-side or quad was a great vehicle when hunting Elk or Antelope in the Southwest. We found using these modes of transportation we were able to cover ground efficiently without the rough ride of a 4x4 truck. 

In the Midwest having a quad and side-by-side was overkill because we walked less than 1/2 mile to get to a tree stand or blind. But, we are always concerned about the trail of scent that may remain walking through the grass and woods. 

Covering ground both in the Southwest and Midwest is important and keeping our scent off the ground is very important when hunting animals like deer and elk.  

An e-bike makes it easy to cover longer distances quickly and quietly. With the electric motor assisting me, I can move quickly and with less effort through rough terrain, without making excessive noise or leaving a scent trail that could spook the game. Is there a difference? Yes, there are multiple differences and each of the other 16 areas discussed will talk about and highlight what makes up an off-road hunting electric bike. But what you need to know right now is these 6 Factors:

1. Durability and Stability - an off-road electric bike will be constructed with a stronger frame and will have heavy-duty components.

4. Motors - your motor provides the watts and the watts provide the speed. The best hunting eBikes will have 750 or 1000 watts. Typical street bikes will have watts between 300-500.

The motor will be strong, but not rated to handle hills or heavy loads. The motor may be located within the hub of the wheels and sometimes the battery will be removable. The battery on a road bike maybe 17.5 Ah or less. The amp hour for a batter influences the charge and range for the bike.

Road bikes are great for local travel in light conditions with minimal difficult influences and shorter times between charging. Could they work for hunting, yes they could. But understand the durability and quality may be less and therefore they may not be able to take the rough terrain a hunter will likely travel. Additionally, a smaller battery may cause the hunter to get stranded if they don't have enough charge or amp hours. 

Price will influence all mountain bike-style off-road bikes. E-bikes are no exception. The price is influenced by the components of the bike. Like many brands, there are levels of components being manufactured and included on the bikes. Best Motor Power, Gearing, and Power Supply for Hunting E-bikes

The motor is a vital component of any off-road electric bike. Having enough power or wattage will influence bikers' ability to travel on mountain trails or roads. If you are hunting in a more flat ground location and carrying less weight, a lower wattage may be a good possibility. Having a lower-watt motor could influence the price and save some money.

When looking at hunting electric bikes our opinion is that 750-watt is the minimum requirement and if you can, get a 1000w motor that can be turned down to 750w in the control panel. Make sure the max wattage is what the motor is rated for. Some manufacturers rate the wattage at, for example, 750w but the actual max output is something less. Therefore you may never get to the full max wattage for a motor. 

Gearing

Gearing in a motor is very important to long life and durability. Having components made of lesser quality materials means they will likely break down and have a shorter life.

Power Kicks in When Pedaling

There are three classes of E-bikes. Two of the three require continuous pedaling and ultimately the bike is a pedal assist. Class 1 and Class 3 E-bikes are pedal assist. You need to peddle to keep the bike engage and moving.

Battery Life, Range, and Distance for eBikes for Hunters

Along with the motor, a vital addition is a battery included with your bike. Understand that the battery provides a few different and important factors. Here are the two main factors you should understand about electric bike batteries. 

1. Ah or amp hours (WH or Watt Hours) - tells you the range on a charge (assuming some standard metrics for usage)
2. V or volt - is the power the battery is providing the motor to help assist it in pushing the bike forward

When choosing a bike you will be looking at factors including the "amp hours" or distance the bike can travel before recharging and the "volts" the battery puts out.

Batteries can come in all different sizes but what you need to understand is how many Ah or amp hours you can travel. Several factors could be included in the "actual" range the bike can travel. 

1. What was the charge initially? Full Charge, 1/2 Charge, or something else.
2. How much weight are you carrying? If you are maxing out the bike you could lose amp hours.
3. Terrain - are you constantly going uphill? The terrain could influence how long the battery will last.
4. Temperature - the temp of cold or heat could influence the actual amp hours

Again, this information is provided so you, as the end user, best understand the bike, components, and expectations of the bike. 

When looking for a hunting bike we suggest looking for a bike that has 48 volts (more horsepower) and higher Ah or "Amp Hours". A great combination would be 21 or 25 amp hours with 48 volts giving this batter the utmost opportunity for success.

E-Bike Suspension for Hunting Bikes: Full Suspension or Hardtail

Bike suspension for traditional mountain bikes and e-bikes is no different. There are two distinct options the hardtail (traditional) or the full-suspension frame. 

Choosing the right option for suspension can be difficult and three main factors come into deciding which riding style is right for you. Those are:

1. Cost of a Full-Suspension Bike (typically $800 - $1200 more)
2. The Terrain and Amount of Time You Will be on The Bike (full-suspension better for comfort on more difficult trails)
3. Experience Level of Rider (hardtail best option for beginner to intermediate mountain bike users)

Hardtail Electric Bikes

This is the standard suspension bike. The normal bike a beginner or intermediate biker would use. They are more popular due to the price point of the bike. 

Hardtail bikes have a front fork suspension with a solid frame. The front fork typically has a coil system or air suspension forgiving the rugged road and bumps.

Hardtail bikes have both a front and rear derailleur giving more gearing options and the frame of a hardtail bike is solid and stronger giving the bike the ability to climb and navigate trails easily.

Full-Suspension Electric Bikes

The full-suspension mountain or electric hunting bike comes with a front fork suspension same as that of the hardtail bike, but it also comes with a rear shock to absorb the bumps and uneven terrain the rider will be traversing. 

The rear shock makes for a much more comfortable and enjoyable ride. The full suspension most definitely would be the better ride, but the addition of the shock helps keep the tires engaged with the ground and therefore more traction during the ride. 

The full-suspension bike is a two-piece bike. There is a mainframe and a swing arm. The rear shock attaches the two pieces. 

Figuring out the best type of suspension bike for you is a personal preference. Having the money and expectation you will be using this e-bike on the most difficult of trails, then the choice should be full-suspension like the Bakcou Storm which is a rugged, technical bike with full-suspension. 

Speed: How Fast Can A Hunting Electric Bike Go

This is a classic case of what manufacturers say and what actually can be accomplished.

Electric bikes come in Three Classes. Class 1 and Class 2 have a max pedal-assist of 20mph. That means when the bike reaches 20 mph the motor stops assisting the rider and should max out at 20 mph. The Class 3 e-bikes can max out with pedal assist at 28mph. The Class 3 E-bike can have different requirements and restrictions depending on where it is being ridden. Consult your state's riding requirements for electric bikes and make sure you know their requirement for State Land and Federal Land in your area.

However, those figures are true "testing" and max capabilities put out by several manufacturers. The truth is the max speed has to do with other factors including the terrain, weight on the bike, battery, motor, and your ability to pedal will all play into the speed capabilities of your e-bike.

You should be concerned about the battery and motor for the electric bike you are purchasing for hunting over what the top speed of the bike is on a flat paved ground. The battery and motor influence your ability to get in front of your game before they get out of sight. 

Noise for Riders on the Trail

When we're hunting there are many concerns and issues we have. One such issue is scaring our game by walking through the woods or using a side-by-side or quad vehicle that makes a lot of noise. 

A benefit of the eBike for hunting is the quiet nature of the ride. You need to get in front of a herd or elk before they get away. The side-by-side or truck could scare them away while the quiet electric bike gets you there with little to no noise influencing the animals. 

If the game is a ways off, most likely you will not be able to run or jog to the spot in time to get off a shot. The electric bike is a game changer for hunting. You save energy getting to the right spot and you are not winded trying to take a risky shot. 

In Arizona, in several of the units we hunt, we can see for several miles. The problem is we are typically glassing and need to get to a spot quickly and quietly. The e-bike for hunting has been our way to take advantage of the situation without scaring off the animals. 

In Michigan, we have used bikes to get to our stands quicker and with less ground noise and impact leaving our scent along the trail. The deer don't appear to be too concerned over the rider and while they get a little hesitant, the riders are typically past them and out to the blinds before the animals are aware. 

Weight Limits or Payload Capacity for Hunting E-Bikes

Each bike model will have a slightly different weight limit. Typically, a well-constructed electric bike for hunting has the most durable frame and suspension, and it will have a max weight limit of 300 lbs. A 300lb capacity is a bike that is equipped by the manufacturer and without accessories or a rider. 

When figuring out your weight overall, consider any rifle or bow racks, and accessory racks on the back and your weight. Your weight includes you, the clothes, and any backpacks or equipment you are hauling.

This is where the true hunting electric bike will be most beneficial. Having the capability to carry all your gear and still ride your bike will get you where you need to go.

You just picked up a new hunting e-bike and CRAP it doesn't fit in the car and you can't pick it up. 

Yes, the e-bikes you are looking at for hunting are heavier than traditional mountain bikes and lighter-weight street e-bikes.

The difference is the bikes can come with different battery options and the manufacturer is letting you know the weight overall without the battery option.

How Durable is an E-Bike for Hunting

Like many hunting products, price and brand will reflect the durability of a product. The top-of-the-line hunting electric bikes will have the best frames, quality welds, and top-of-the-line components. All these factors into the durability of a bike.

The aluminum frame is the most common with an alloy of 6061. This makes for a sturdy and durable frame. The suspensions, gearing, and wheels will make for the best overall bike and a lifetime of use.

Overall, the components are similar to that of a traditional mountain bike. The gears, breaks, forks, etc. will need to be updated at some point and maintained after each use. 

The better you take care of your eBike the longer it will last and the more durable it will be. Check your components before every ride and make sure your battery is charged. 

What is a Typical Warranty for a Hunting E-Bike

Like with many warranty options "buyer beware". Read and understand each manufactures warranty and all the complex warranty information. There are opportunities to buy an extended warranty when you purchase, but here is a brief overview of what we found looking at the Rambo Bikes, Eunorau Bike, and Bakcou Bike Warranties.

All have a 1-year limited warranty. Each covers different components within that limited warranty period.

Items typically included in a 1-year Limited Manufacturer Warranty - registered to the original owner are typically only covered. 

• Battery - not to include improper charging, water damage
• Frame
• Motor
• Controller
• Wiring Harness
• LCD Display

Eunorau e-bike frames are covered by a replacement warranty for 5 years based on the frame production date.

Rambo e-bike frames are warranted against factory defects for the lifetime of the original purchaser - not transferable.

No manufacturer will cover the battery for faulty charging or damage. Warranties also won't cover normal wear and tear. Wear and tear includes consumable parts including tires, tubes, brake pads, chains, pedals, kickstands, etc...

Refer to the specific manufacturer's warranty for each bike you are looking to purchase. If you are purchasing at a local retailer, check with them prior to purchasing to see what warranties they might offer.

Electric bikes have prices that range from less than $1,000 to over $8,000. The factors that influence the price include; frame, components, motor, battery or batteries, warranty, tires, chain, brakes, suspension, and more...

Where Can I Legally Ride My Hunting Electric Bike

This topic is a live and ever-flowing answer. There are different regulations and laws for each city, state, county, territory, BLM Lands, State Lands, and Federal Lands. There are different rules and regulars for each hiking trail and backwoods trail.

There are a lot of different rules for this topic and each trail or mountain may have different regulations.

Knowing there are three classes of electric bikes will help you understand some of the rules better. In the following section we go into the different classes a little more, but for what you need to know here and now Class 1 and Class 2 are typically allowed on most sidewalks and trails that allow for mountain bikes. Class 3 is typically considered only a road e-bike and cannot be used on normal mountain bike trails, sidewalks, or other non-authorized vehicle travel roads and trails.

The e-bike regulations for each state are different and each state may have a different name than electric or e-bike. Make sure you check with local authorities for changes or different laws governing electric bikes on their land. The BLM has a very informative website. 

To Officially be Classified as an E-Bike the Bike Must fall into 1 of 3 Classes

The great thing about some of the best hunting bikes is they can be modified to be one or all of the three different classes. You can sometimes purchase one bike and use it for all three scenarios. 

Knowing the Class of the e-bike, now you can look up your city or county rules for electric bike use. There are different rules for remote roads and trails and you need to make sure you are following all rules of the land. 

Don't use a Class 3 bike if you are traveling on a non-motorized road or trail. You will be breaking the law!

Before we go into each of the three classes of electric bikes being made. You may need to know what you can ride legally in the state you plan on using your bike.

Here are a couple of resources that may help find e-bike regulations by state:

• Electric Bike Regulations by State: e-Bike Generation has a page with the electric bicycle laws in the USA by state. Take a second and review this map for your state or the state you plan on traveling to for more in-depth information. 

While these resources are great for information, remember it’s your responsibility to make sure you read and know the rules and regulations. Not all Classes of E-bikes are allowed on every trail. And please, preserve the trails and follow the rules when using a standard peddle bike or e-bike in the backcountry. 

For example, in Arizona the Arizona State Parks and Trails it's important to remember that e-bike regulations can change and may vary depending on your location. Always check with local authorities to make sure you comply with the rules. Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed on Arizona trails. Know the rules before you go!

The USDA Forest Service has rules on e-bikes on their roads. The guidance for management can be found for the class 1, 2, and 3 bikes and can be read on their website. 

Make sure you analyze all the possible rules and classes before purchasing. If you plan on operating an e-bike both on the street and when hunting, there are options you may want to consider.
