Offroad E-Bike Hunters Need Optimal Power, Torque, and Range
When choosing a hunting bike, there are limitless configurations and components that make for the most difficult of decisions to determine which bike you choose to support and spend money on.
Start with these two factors when shopping for an electric bike:
- Battery
- Motor
The battery requirements have to be 48V or 48Volts of power to be a good hunting e-bike option. Think of the "volts" as how much electricity is leaving the battery to push the motor. In backcountry terrain, you want to most volts possible to push your motor and give you the highest torque possible when traveling the hills or pulling a trailer.
The motors on the market advertise in "watts". The watts for offroad e-bikes have to have a minimum of 750w and bikes with a maximum output of 1500 watts are best for the most extreme conditions. Bafang has an M620 model that produces a range from 750w to a max of 1500w. This brand is one of the best on the market as evidenced from the variety of bike manufacturers using this same model motor.
When dealing with watts you are also falling into one of three different bike configurations for e-bikes. Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3, and each has a minimum requirement and max requirement to stay legal on the road. Knowing which watt your bike is putting out and the speed the bike can go will determine which Class your bake complies with. Get more information here in our blog on the Three Classes of E-Bike.
After the Motor and the Battery, you will have a variety of different types of braking systems, suspension, gears, and frame styles. E-Bikes are FAT Tire Offroad bikes typically between 3" and 5" in width and they are built to travel on the roughest terrain possible.
Here are the 15 models of backcountry offroad e-bikes we put together for you. These all have mid-drive motors. Check out our blog on "What are the Top 17 Factors Hunters Need to Know and Consider before Buying an E-Bike" where we cover all things electric bikes for those just starting out.
If you would like to see our picks for both hub and mid-drive motors check out our blog Top 8 Best Offroad e-Bikes for Hunters in 2023 Reviewed.
Why Choosing an e-Bike with a Mid-Drive Motor is Best for Hunting
As you are looking around, you will find most electric bikes comes with two types of motors. Either with a mid-drive motor, featured here are the 15 Top Hunting e-Bikes in this blog, or electric bikes with hub-drive motors, which we provide the Top 7 hub-drive motors for e-Bike Hunters and you can find out more by checking out that blog.
While each can perform well in rough terrain or on hills the mid-drive is considered to be the best choice for the most extreme conditions. The more costly of the two types of e-bike motors, the mid-drive motor requires bike manufacturers to custom-build a frame that will house the motor between the pedals.
With the location of the mid-drive motor between the pedals, there is more crank and power applied to the chain and gears. The mid-drive motor utilizes the gearing for the bike and ultimately the torque applied gives the rider the best climbing opportunity.
While not proven, the mid-drive motor location, along with the power output available, the rider can have a more efficient RPM and get better range on a battery.
The bottom line when using an e-bike for hunting, you want to have the most power and torque possible. The mid-drive motor provides that power and torque while providing the best performance and balance for your bike.
The following are 15 of the best e-bikes for hunting on the market. Each has a mid-drive motor. Check out these bikes and their manufacturers for more information. Shaggy Outdoors is not promoting one bike over another in this review as being the BEST available. The bikes are presented starting with the least expensive to the most expensive. With many products, the price reflects the quality of the components being used on the bike.

Suspension for Electric Hunting Bikes
Mountain bikes and off-road e-bikes come in two suspension configurations. The standard is the hardtail bike which typically comes with a front fork that has either a coil, gas, or air suspension and the second version is the full suspension which has a front shock and a rear shock.
Here's a brief explanation of each:
- Hardtail e-Bike: A hardtail mountain bike refers to a bike that has front suspension (a suspension fork) but lacks rear suspension. It typically features a rigid frame with no pivots or shock absorbers in the rear. The front suspension fork helps absorb impacts from rough terrain, such as rocks and roots, providing some level of comfort and control. Hardtails are generally lighter, more efficient in pedaling, and less complex in terms of maintenance compared to full-suspension bikes. They are popular and found in the majority of hunting e-bikes.
- Full Suspension e-Bike: A full suspension bike, also known as a dual suspension or a "dually," has both front and rear suspension systems. It features a suspension fork at the front and a rear shock absorber connected to a pivoting rear triangle. The rear suspension helps absorb bumps and impacts, providing enhanced comfort, traction, and control. Full-suspension bikes are suitable for various types of off-road riding, including downhill, trail riding, and technical terrain. They excel in rough and challenging trails by offering better traction and stability.
The choice between a hardtail and a full suspension e-bike for hunting depends on your riding preferences, terrain conditions, experience, and intended use. If you prioritize efficiency, climbing ability, and smoother trails, a hardtail might be a suitable choice. On the other hand, if you frequently encounter rough, technical terrain and prioritize comfort and control, a full-suspension bike would be more appropriate.
It's important to note that both types of bikes come in various designs, with different levels of suspension travel, frame materials, and components, allowing riders to find a suitable option based on their specific needs and riding style.
Pros and Cons of Mid-Drive Electric Bike Motors
- Mid bike location of the motor allows for better bike control and more traditional feel
- Get more initial power and gearing using a mid-drive motor
- Better traction between each wheel with weight centered on the bike
- Maintenance is easier as the motor is enclosed in the frame with easy access
- Mid-Drive can put added torque and pressure on the chain and cause the chain to break
- Gear control and knowledge required to understand the best gears for performance
- If the chain breaks you could be carrying your bike as the chain is necessary to turn the rear wheel
- More expensive option than the hub-drive motor e-bikes
Final Thoughts on Mid-Drive E-Bikes for Hunters
In conclusion, mid-drive motor e-bikes offer significant advantages for hunters and off-road riders seeking versatile and capable options. Their unique attributes make them a compelling choice for these specific activities:
- Power and Efficiency: Mid-drive motors are positioned near the bike's cranks, providing direct power to the drivetrain. This placement maximizes efficiency, allowing hunters and off-road riders to tackle challenging terrains with ease. The motor's torque and power assist enable riders to conquer steep inclines, rough trails, and various off-road obstacles more effectively than other e-bike configurations.
- Balanced Weight Distribution: The mid-drive motor's centralized position contributes to better weight distribution across the bike, enhancing stability and maneuverability. This balance is particularly valuable for hunters who may need to navigate through tight spots or engage in precise movements while carrying equipment or game.
- Improved Traction and Control: By delivering power directly to the drivetrain, mid-drive motors enhance traction, especially on challenging surfaces like loose gravel, mud, or steep ascents. This added control is advantageous for off-road riders and hunters, providing confidence and stability during demanding off-road situations or when traversing rugged landscapes.
- Battery Efficiency and Range: Mid-drive motor e-bikes typically feature efficient power management systems that optimize battery usage. This efficiency allows riders to cover longer distances on a single charge, essential for extended hunting trips or off-road adventures in remote locations.
- Customizability and Adaptability: Many mid-drive motor e-bikes offer customizable power settings and programmable features, allowing riders to adjust the level of assistance according to their specific needs. This adaptability proves valuable for hunters who may require silent operation during stealthy pursuits or for off-road riders who want to fine-tune their riding experience to match different terrains and conditions.
In summary, mid-drive motor e-bikes offer a reliable and capable platform that enhances the overall experience, allowing riders to explore challenging terrains, access remote locations, and enjoy their outdoor pursuits with confidence and convenience.
