The Push Button Call is Best for New Turkey Hunters
Are you new to turkey hunting and looking for an advantage in the woods?
There are several calls you can purchase and practice with before the season begins and our recommendation is you pick up an easy-to-use push-button friction call.
Push button calls fall into the category of friction calls. The box construction makes for easy calling while in the field.
Take some of the advanced techniques used in other calls out and just make the sounds of yelps and clucks with an easy-to-operate one-handed box call. In just a few minutes, you can start speaking the hens' language in your woods.
Every new hunter should start with a push-button call. Having an easy-to-use call will remove the stress of making the perfect sounds using a more advanced mouth or box call.
We’ve put together 5 of the easiest and best push-button calls for every hunter. If you are looking to advance your skills, then check out our blog on The Top 3 Turkey Calls Every Hunter Should Own and Master Before Hunting Season Starts.

Why New Hunters Need a Push-Pull or Push-Button Turkey Call
With turkey hunting, there are a lot of things to consider. Do I use a decoy, should I use a blind, what camouflage should I be wearing, what loads are best, and so much more?
There are so many questions it's hard for the new hunter to consider all the possible gear. The Shaggy Outdoors Team put together The Ultimate Gear Guide for Turkey Hunters to help make sure you are 100% prepared.
The new turkey hunters can help their success using a push-button call. Choose a call that is easy to use and can be used right out of the box without conditioning or other preparation. The other calls on the market are excellent choices and we've compiled several box, slate, locator, and mouth calls for those looking for advanced call options, but we believe there are only two calls a new turkey hunter should start with.
- Locator Call - there are several calls on the market and we believe a good locator call should be in every hunter's vest.
- Push-Button Call - an easy-to-use call for all hunting occasions.
Once you have experienced turkey hunting or if you have a chance to get out and do some calling ahead of your hunt, start with easy options. If you find your skills are advancing you should start practicing with more advanced call options.
New hunters stick with what's easy and can get you success every time out.
How to Use a Push-Pull Turkey Call
Most of the push-button calls are easily learned. Start by holding the call with your offhand. We suggest if you are a right-handed shooter hold the call in your left hand or vice versa if you are left-handed.
By holding and practicing the call in the opposite hand you can take advantage of calling while turkeys are in your immediate area. The opposite arm is setting up the shot and your calling will keep the birds coming close.
The Ohio DNR did a video on the push button call and how you might use one in the field. This short video gives excellent information for beginner hunters and push-button call users.
